THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS
For a Malayali to make a success of himself in India’s Hindi heartland is no mean matter. And that is precisely what Joys Sebastian has done. The former sr. vice president of ATN channel is now into his latest creation, a varied one at that. The great Indian roads, which he also produces, now for Doordarshan national network is a serious attempt to portray the ‘real India’. As Joys himself suggests from the dramatic, snow swept ranges of northern Himalayas the lush tropical atmosphere of the south, our country offers some of the most stunning scenic vision in the world’’. And he has found the roads as arteries running through the body connecting the farthest points to the centre of the country’’. And in this travel we want to show our fellowmen our scenic splendour, cultural heritage, vitality, colour and also humour’’ he says.

The censor board has always worked on a logic of its own as far as using the scissors is concerned, but their recent act put to shame their past record and in the words of the victim of this episode, “ created some sort of media history”. Joys Sebastian, executive producer of Delhi Diary, a cable video weekly magazine, submitted to Volume 18 which was to be telecast last Sunday to the censors for clearance. The censors, according to Joys, say theatre-owners were interpolating explicit scenes after having first obtained the censor certificate. But what is the censor board doing about it? It bans the video magazine carrying a story on them, but allows the original films to be screened in the theatres openly. This is undoubtedly the board’s best innings so far. Finally, after the producers appealed to the review committee, the volume was given an Adults Only Certificate!

DELHI MID DAY
And now, news gets ‘A’ censor certificate. The censor board came down heavily upon Delhi Diary, a cable news service, when it refused censor certificate to a volume of the diary to be replayed recently. The certificate was refused on the grounds that the news service was carrying certain objectionable stories. DDCN executive producer, Joys Sebastian, questioned the refusal of the censor certificate and asserted that myriad programmes touching an entire gamut of topical issues had already been covered by the service in the beginning last year.

Though launched only a year and seven months back JIAN TV has made its presence felt. Proudly says Mr. Sebastian, “we were the first to come out with the live telecast of the recent assembly election. Jain TV announced the result of many constituencies much before Mr. Prannoy Roy did, or did Doordarshan. It was the determination of Jain Election Special team to supply the recent results of the elections to the eagerly waiting viewers. Jain TV had created many landmarks in the field of film based programmes also.
